Considering Alternative Buy-Ins for Cavalcade. Feedback?

Post by BASHMAN »

Hey, I wanted to let folks know that I've been considering some alternative buy-ins to the Cavalcade to make it a little more affordable.

Currently, the buy in is $20+S&H to pre-order the finished 50 Cavalcade characters. With that order you get:
1. To submit your own character to be included in the Cavalcade, which will be fully illustrated (we send the sketch to you for approval) and statted-out, have 12 or so plot-seeds made for, etc.
2. Get a free pdf featuring your submitted character.
3. Credit for creating the character, collaboration with others

I'm thinking about 2 possible lower cost buy-ins, and want to get some feedback from people.

1. $10 Buy-In: You get #1, #2, and #3 as above, without the hardcopy of 50 characters, or the shipping & handling. Instead, you get ALL of the Cavalcade PDFs, however.

2. $5 Buy-In: You get #1-3 as above. Instead of getting a hardcopy, you get the PDF featuring your submission.

What do people think of these alternatives? Would these make you more likely to purchase a slot in the Cavalcade?

I like the option #1 as, having already earned the hardcopy with my first and second entries I'd be able to submit a character for each set and still get both the full pdf and printed hardcopy versions. Win-win for me.

I can see some people would also find the $5 (option #2) as a great alternative as well.

Actually, now that I'm thinking about it a winning strategy might be for someone to buy the $20 option with one character and get all PDFs as well as hardcopy and then submit one additional character per set (of 10 characters per pdf release) at the $5 buy-in level: thus having 5 characters submitted for only twice the cost of one character in the original plan.

Now that's a deal -- assuming you'd like to submit that many characters. Edit: It was only the cost that was holding me back from submitting more villains!

Cool, so you'd buy more slots at the reduced PDF rates?

Yes, at $5 I'd give you 3 more offerings (but each one would be for a different pdf release - trying to create all those inter-character connections is a lot of work).

Hi,

I am interested in the new options and would definitely submit some characters if you chose to make them available.

I am in the UK and have previously declined to make a submission to the Cavalcade because shipping costs on the physical book would bump the price up too much for me to be able to justify it.

Let me know if you decide to go ahead with the new options. Thanks.

So far, this is putting me on the path towards offering these options. Thanks for the feedback, folks.

Both offers sound really cool. One question though, do I keep the rights to characters submitted?

From what I understand you do keep the rights to your character but the image is owned by Basic Action Games (though you still get a copy of it for your own personal use).

I had been intending to go for the original option, but these new ones make multiple submissions more appealing.

The character, yes. However, you can choose to allow / not allow Basic Action Games to re-use the character in another product. The artwork however, becomes property of Basic Action Games and could be re-used in another project, even if the character is not.

There is also a caveat that the character needs to be original. If it was published somewhere else, you'd need some release from that publisher to authorize re-using the character for Cavalcade.

The first ten characters of the Cavalcade are now out. Here is the link:

I think the 2nd set is somewhere around 6 or so charcters complete (but that's just my guess).

Actually, the second set has 10 characters commissioned now, and 9 / 10 art pieces are finished. Once I get in the last art piece, I'll finish the character sheets and the people in Pack 2 will begin collaborating to make Cavalcade Pack 2's storylines.

What's more, the second set has 5 characters commissioned already. So out of 50 slots, half have been filled so far.

With these new pricing options, I'm hoping that more people will fill in the slots more quickly, especially when Pack 2 is released, as the updated prices will be listed in the back matter.

FYI: I intend on putting up the purchase links for the new prices Friday.

Cool. If were already half-way through set number 3 then I better get off my duff as I'd like to get a character in for that one. [This weekend!]
