DC's New 52

Post by BeardedDork »

Is anybody reading these? What are you reading? What are your thoughts?

I've picked up Action (Good), Animal Man (Awesome, Indescribably so, buying a subscription tomorrow), Batwing (meh, not likely to pick up #2), Detective (meh+), Green Arrow (Disappointing, not likely to pick up #2), JLA (OK, it gets one more issue), Swamp Thing (Good).

I have a subscription to Aquaman, based on Geoff Johns writing something not GL, and Wonder Woman, because Azzarello has never written anything I didn't like. As of this morning (Payday) I'm also subscribed to Animal Man.

I'll buy all the #1s, but I'll only subscribe to the ones I like.

I don't really buy comics anymore, but I do get to read copies my friends buy. I read JLI and Stormwatch. JLI wasn't bad, but I'm a little unsure of the lineup being that effective. I am impressed that the team is almost evenly split between men and women (4 women on the team is pretty cool). The story wasn't bad, but seemed to take too much space getting to the thick of it.

Stormwatch, on the other hand, was really cool. It feels like they might be throwing in a little Planetary into the mix. It's also interesting that most of the team is made up of members of what was The Authority (even though many of them started with Stormwatch). If I had a way to buy digital comics, I'd collect this one. Sadly, until I have something more up to date, that's not possible yet

Hey folks!

I'll be honest - I thought I was going to dislike the DC reboot. I thought it would be all gimmick and little substance.

So far, I've enjoyed what I've read. JLA wasn't spectacular, but it was fun! It's actually inspired to do a reboot of a campaign I ran 20 years ago. I'm running it in BASH, of course, so I'll give some details on that once I get it off the ground (which will be sometime after this semester at school).

Action Comics, however, blew me away. I'm not saying it's the best comic ever, but I was surprised to see them take Superman back to his 1938 roots. This is not the big blue boyscout that Superman morphed into after WWII. This is the original vigilante Superman, standing up to corporate greed, unresponsive government, and urban corruption. Superman vs. the City of Tomorrow indeed!

Can't wait to read more!

Best,

I liked Action quite a bit, I want to see more before fully committing to it. A buddy of mine really liked Stormwatch, but he was a big Authority fan whereas I was not, so I didn't pick it up. I like Booster Gold but the rest of the JLI line up didn't make me want to pick it up, My buddy said he wasn't that impressed by it.

I enjoyed Acton and Justice League (loved the art).

I thought Legion Lost was mediocre and Firestorm was terrible.

I found this the other day - a review of one of the New 52 titles by Jim Shooter (who used to run Marvel):

http://www.jimshooter.com/2011/10/dc-comics-new-52.html

I'm guessing that 75% of the titles don't make it a full year, but I've been wrong before.

I'll check some of those others out that were liked by fellow BASHERS.

Again, I warn you to stay away from Firestorm - and this from a guy who owns all the Volume 1 and Volume 2 runs.

Also, anyone else boggled that a monthly comic can have a $2.99 or $3.99 or $4.99 (or more) cover price? My old brain still wants to believe they are 75 cents per issue.

In my time really collecting comics they went from $1.00 to $1.75, I balked at the comic prices when I tried to get back into it six or seven (wow really, that long?) years ago. This month the 3 or 4 dollar covers didn't bother me as much because I realize that it is pretty much the same amount of money, maybe a little more. That said I just couldn't bring myself to spend $5 on Ultimate Spider-Man #1 even with the reports I've heard that it was far and away the best book of that week.

I thought Firestorm was Ok, but I most likely will not end up buying #2, just to many other really good titles that last week of the month.

Thanks for the reviews!

My brother does a podcast with his friend (The Big One Comic Podcast) and I believe they are going to do a review of the "52" books next week:

Any other books anyone would recommend?
